Thirty-two-year-old Serena Williams was diagnosed with a viral infection and as a result the Number One player in the world had to withdraw from her doubles match with older sister Venus Williams.
Serna looked flat out exhausted as she struggled to obtain tennis balls from the children that gathered them. Serena struggled so much so her match was delayed 10 minutes as onlookers chattered about the greatest tennis player’s ever condition.
The medical staff checked her blood pressure as they tried to gauge the severity of her illness. Despite the delay, Serena gave it another shot, only to fail miserably. She served up four double faults–serving balls that skipped across the ground and never looking like the player with that scary but powerful serve.
Serena was done.
Older Sister Venus clutched her younger sister hand and escorted Serena to the sidelines as they informed the judge of their withdrawal. Serena was seen wiping away tears as she finally succumbed to the illness she gave everything to fight off.
I expect Serena to take time off and heal mentally and physically. The next major tournament is in August: the US Open.
I’m looking forward to a healthy Serena in August, as she looks to add to her career wins of 32,the most of any man or woman actively playing. Without a doubt, she is the greatest player ever in the tennis game
